Dr. Sara R. Ahronheim is an Emergency Physician trained at McGill University. She currently works in a large, urban, academic, tertiary care centre located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Aside from patient care, Dr. Ahronheim teaches medical students and residents how to become compassionate, knowledgeable physicians. She also runs the Physician Wellbeing program at her site, and is passionate about maintaining work-life balance and promoting joy at work. An alumnus of Queen’s University, Dr. Ahronheim studied Wildlife Biology there while dipping her toes in medicine as a volunteer with the First Response Team.
Over the last few years, Dr. Ahronheim has maintained a blog at myblackscrubs.com, where she often posts short essays about experiences in the ED. She has had stories published in the Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine (CJEM) as well as in many other journals, newsletters and websites.
Dr. Ahronheim crafts memorable books using her own experiences as subject matter. Working as an ambulance medic during a turbulent time overseas, she kept reams of journal entries that are the basis for her first book, “Side by Side with Heroes”. Forthcoming books will pull the reader into the life of a medical student, then Emergency Medicine resident, and finally an Attending Emergency Physician. The stories are told in first person, with painstaking detail and colourful descriptions of the people and places she encounters. Emotional and raw at times, these stories will hook a reader and leave them wanting more.
Dr. Ahronheim is a mother to two wonderful, rambunctious children and a loveable tiny goldendoodle.
